Me Shamelessly Cropping People Out Of Photos

Is it just me or does this month feel like it is never ever ending? Not that that's necessarily a bad thing, 'cause I have spent the last week doing absolutely nothing productive whatsoever and have a deadline coming up in February, so I could use a little timelapse, because lately I have been....

....dead-tired, even after (or because of?) sleeping in as late as I've only done in summer of 2017, and that was post-breakup-depression napping, so I don't know what's up with that, but it has to stop 'cause it's getting on my nerves.

....getting the urge to clean out every single junk drawer in my room and replace their contents with stuff I actually use. Problem is, now I don't know what to do with the junk (I am NOT throwing it out, that is not the kind of person I am and we all have to accept that).

....watching How I Met Your Mother Reruns and listening to an old 3OH!3 album and Carrie Underwood songs in my unusally cleaned-out room for hours, listening to my loveliest friend's voice memos (she would have to tell way more exciting things this month, that's for sure) and feeling like I'm 14 again. Must be the impending doom of life responsibilities. Did I tell you I canceled a dentist appointment and just, like, never called again? I ghosted my dentist. It's unfair, I know, but I'm just not ready for serious commitment right now.

But on the other hand, there are quite a few reasons to look forward to February:

First and foremost, my hair! I get it done this week and all of my future fantasy scenarios focus on me looking fabulous with shiny, heat-curled, reasonably-full (let's not get ahead of ourselves here) tresses. For instance,

  • me getting my college diploma
  • me going to the theatre to see Romeo & Juliet in a jeans-and-white T-Shirt production
  • me attending the farewell-party of my bestest friend
  • me visiting my bestest friend in Rome
  • me going back to Hamburg and seeing my fellow interns again
  • me flying in to celebrate a family party (I'm the only single grandchild but damn, I'll have lovely hair)
January just got a whole lot more sizzling, didn't it? Let me see your lists - everything gets better when you write it down. Trust me.

Love,

Let's not even talk about ghosting in (sorta-)relationships. That's unnecessary, childish demeanour and we all know it. But I'm afraid that this sort of misbehavior has latched over to plain, platonic, friendly conversations, and to that I quote the great Stephanie Tanner: How RUDE!

See, sometimes in a girl's life, one feels a bit lonely, especially on certain holidays that are otherwise known as "celebration of love". And in that case, one evaluates their possibilities: Whom to text to get a little pick-me-up? Not every guy in the phone book is suitable for this occasion. The ones with real emotional attachment are too dangerous, as that might lead to further confusion of the heart and a great big case of the Christmas blues. The ones who have ghosted before simply do not deserve to be honored with an outreach at this mushy time of the year. Which leaves us with the one category you hadn't managed to screw up yet: The Friendly Platonic.

The Friendly Platonic is someone who maybe sorta likes you in a non-platonic way but never did anything about it, and whom you like enough to not be totally appaled by the thought of him doing so sometime in the future. It is totally innocently fine to text him first, 'cause you haven't become involved in any texting games yet, and it provides just the dash of excitement and attention you need during this gloomy patch of yours.

It's nice. It's harmless. It's a bit awkward, for that matter, but it's only smalltalk.
Until he asks a nice, harmless, slightly awkward question and then fails to respond to your answer. He reads it, but the day goes by without a follow-up, and then another day, and by now the conversation is basically slandered forever and you are fuming and cursing this poor, friendly guy. And that's because basic rules of common courtesy have been set out of works by all the millenial-textinggame-crap that's out there. It has clogged our natural reaction pipes and fogged our minds and tricked us into thinking we have to have the upper hand in every last two-line exchange. I hate it with passion and fury and at the same time I know that it only affects me so much because I'm getting such a kick out of it myself, when it's playing out nicely for me, that is.

So here I am, a week or so later, in my kid's pyjama's at eleven pm, reading Dolly Alderton's "Everything I know about love" (which, by the way, is another work I'll add to the names I confusingly drop when trying to paint a picture of what I want to do with my newfound graduate status, all while talking so fast no one can follow along so they just assume I have a plan), annoyed with all guys and myself while I'm at it. See, New Year's went by as of today, and I am pausing my read to reevaluate the "Whom can I text on Christmas Day"-question that has turned into the "All the boys who did not wish me a happy new year and why"-saga. Obviously, I did not worry about that at the appropriate time of midnight on the 31st because I was in lovely company in a velvet nineties dress and sparkly tights, looking forward to mousse au chocolat. No, this is for the gloomy first days of January when your new year new me plan is not exactly kicking off to a quick start because you're still binging Christmas candy.

Anyways, see, now, not only do the "attached emotion" and the "currently not talking to me" options fail to surprise. The Friendly Platonic has not redeemed himself by saying "oh wow I got sidetracked, but happy new year doll, maybe we shall meet again soon, would certainly hope so" (please note my oh so visible attempt of a British accent). Well, his loss. I would have dead-on swooned about that for weeks to come.

Get this, lovelies. After getting worked up about the swooning I missed out on I was just over here scrolling through particularly nice messages from the "currently not talking to me" guy, reminiscing about a time when I would stay up until two chatting, get up at six, not eat all day and then meet him in my skimpiest workout clothes to make him text me again after hours (honestly, I know how that sounds, but I assure you it was fun), and whose name pops up as soon as I switch back into online mode (I don't like to see people online while I'm stalking my own conversation with them)? Yeah, indeed.

Am I supposed to wish him a happy new year back or call him out on how firstly, it's the second day of the year so really, it's old news to me, and secondly, how dare he ignore my "you up" text for the whole of  December and then try and slide that past me with a half-effed smiley face and a little fireworks emoji? Or does he want to make a move on me again?

Okay, maybe it isn't a clear indication that he wants to make a move on me again. It's not the "you have every right to be mad" speech he pulled off last time. But it's not like you have to wish someone you ghosted a happy new year. I certainly wouldn't do that. It's a bit much on the false sense of moral, even for him. Also, today is probably the last day you could use new year's wishes as an excuse to randomly contact someone (and ignoring their "you up" text in an elegant fashion): Not doing it around midnight could be due to heavy drinking and other people priorities, not doing it on the 1st due to the hangover and other people priorities still being at your place. So.

It's been 45 minutes and I still haven't decided if/when/what to text him. Two of my friends are dealing with January troubles of sorts that do not call for unsolicited screenshots and me retelling my whole tale of why I still think it's a good idea to talk to someone they repeatedly claimed to despise. My loveliest friend is probably working and not looking at her phone; also, she very definitely despises him as well. Still, I can't be left unsupervised with this.

I hope you've had lots of cute texts from people you actually love, and if not, here's mine to you: Have a magical new year!!

Love,

Rosy Smith

So, that was over in a blink, wasn't it? What did we even do all this time?

Started a new internship and got mean-tweeted in the process. You know, the main struggle in the life of a women's magazine reporter is finding real women to write about. Like, I was given the assignment to look for women who don't fit society's image of a perfect body and feel good about themselves, you know the drill. So I found a woman who has a blog where she's already written about her personal body love history and I thought she was really funny, and she made me think about maybe going to university some more once I finished this course, and I thought oh, maybe we'll have this inspiring conversation and she'll mention me in her blog, and then I hit her up with my interview request and she said "no". Well, she said "thanks for the offer but I'm not interested". Which is pretty close to plain "no". And since I had been reading her blog for days and therefore felt like she would usually have responded in a different tone, I was taken aback a bit. Didn't seem like she was gonna write about the aspiring young journalist who approached her ever so lovely. Seemed more like she was gonna write something about how I had the sheer nerve to even contact her. Let's check her twitter, just for fu-oh.

She actually did tweet about me. Two minutes after sending me her one-sentence blow-off, and not in a nice way. She called me a bunny. At first, I penned out a draft of an email where I'd tell her just how much of a misunderstaning this is and that I had all the best motives in asking her to participate and that I am just an intern with a dream and can't help the fact that these magazines advertise diets....and then she sub-tweeted herself with even more personal critique on my email, and I thought: No way, josé. Not gonna apologize for very politely asking a question that can be easily declined in an equally polite, less public way. I mean, did she think I wasn't gonna read this? Or did she want me to see it but thought it would spice things up a little to go cross-social-media? Who knows. I guess these things are to be expected when part of your work is to drag people out of the corners of the internet and into your weekly. Bunny out.

Went out every weekend and hurt my foot in the process. Funnily enough, what killed me wasn't the dancing until 4 am part, but the long healthy walk alongside the beach. Halfway through, I had to put a tissue into my shoe to stabilize my foot, and some little girl just stood there staring at me taking my boot off like I was performing a sketch. Her father couldn't get her to move until I got up and limped away like a pirate. I am obviously mesmerizing. Anyways, after telling everyone who listened how badly it hurt for two days, I went to the doctor, and he was lecturing me for wearing two year old inlays and high heels everyday, and I got out of there knowing that I didn't have that really bad condition I google-diagnosed myself with, but with no relief of pain at all, as you do.

Did Yin-Yoga and quit the studio. Okay that was misleading, I didn't quit because of the yoga, because I actually loved that - an hour of stretching really intensely and lying on your back with your eyes closed most of the time, how much better can exercise get? - but because I only have two weeks left here. I have not yet figured out how I feel about that, but I know I'm gonna miss that studio.

Went home for 48 hours and ate my body weight in New York cheesecake. Good stuff. Nothing left to add.

Love,

Rosy Smith

Disclaimer: I wrote this months ago and forgot to put it up. By now, I am fully socialised with three other interns who are absolute dolls and with whom I happily share bottles of red. But read on to learn about the time before, will you?

I have wonderful friends. Gorgeous and fun and witty and smart friends. But they're currently being all these amazing things back at home, while I'm here in Hamburg, sitting on my beautiful red couch on a blue Sunday night.

Well, doesn't that sound perky already. Just wait for the rest of this.

I haven't been living here for a significant amount of time, and I haven't exactly been to many social gatherings, so it's not like I've tried and tried and not made any friends, but the outcome is the same, being that I don't really know anyone which leads to the following conclusions:

I don't know where the cool kids go. That's a bit of a vicious circle, too; because I have no idea where to go to meet people who would know where to go to have a good time, I neither meet those people nor do I learn about any insider locations where I could have those "only in Hamburg" experiences. Those places simply do not show up in tourist guides, small cafés with the best homemade hot chocolate, restaurants where they sing the menu to you, bars where the drinks are cheap but the music is good. Stores where quirky girls work the counter and take you dancing after hours.

Me when I was so bored I had to take pictures of myself for fun

I don't go out alone, therefore I don't meet people to go out with. I want to try and bring myself to go somewhere on Friday or Saturday nights, but apart from the "being a girl out in the dark with a semi heavy handbag as her only weapon" situation, which I could overlook, it's just so weird to find a table to yourself and then stare at groups of young people and try to telepathically make them like you. Is that how adults make friends? It seems awkward.

Maybe I should try harder to get on with the other interns, but even though we chat nicely at lunch I can't picture us grouped around my coffee table with a bottle of red, talking about life and the way we want our hair to look when we get married. (See, those were different interns back then)

My visitors from last weekend have friends here, so we met up with them and I instantly liked them, but we didn't make plans to get together when it's just me - how do these things happen? Is making new friends like dating, only even harder because you have to convince multiple people at once that you're a desirable addition to their circle?

If you have the answer, do tell.

Love,

Rosy Smith

I didn't expect returning back to work to throw me off this much, but honestly, they produce five different weekly magazines at my new office and everyone's writing for each one and I can't even figure out how many letter combinations you can get out of a five letter word. And I'm not in the outlook calendar so I just run to the conference room when everybody else does. But I get to write several pages myself and run around with a notepad and sit in fast-talk meetings and that's very, very nice.

Me and the other interns stuck to our January plan which was essentially to go out a lot because that's the last month we're all here. Didn't say it was the most detailed plan ever known to mankind. But we hit the Reeperbahn (that's this famous partying/red light district street) and I have a question: Did the people in the first few minutes of Dirty Dancing know each other? And if not, did they at least ask for each other's names? Dancing culture sure has changed since the days of Elizabeth and Darcy skipping around each other while firing sarcastic questions with every twirl. But then again, Darcys are rare.

Someone took a picture

I'm on season three of Jane The Virgin and oh my Goodness, why oh why? I'm not gonna spoil you (even though it is unlikely because I am, as usual, late for the party) but I'd like to know who wrote that script.

Oh and I bought quite a lot of second-hand stuff lately, which is a first for me because remember, I get icky over hotel sheets. But my loveliest friend discovered a website where they inspect the pieces and give you their condition and the deals were too good to resist (granted, I didn't try too hard but anyways). The package is arriving tomorrow, and I hope they'll put it in the hallway, because I'm never home on weekdays and you had to give your neighbours full names in order to direct the package to them and I hardly know their last names (and that only because they're written out next to their doors).

So yeah, now we're up to date. Hope January's treating you well.

Behold, I am wearing a sweatshirt, for the first time in years. I will not keep it on when I'm leaving the house tonight. That would be sheer madness.

So, it is the first real day of the year (because really, who gets anything done on January 1st?) and it's time to start wrapping our heads around what that means....

'Tis the year I'll graduate. Huh. I almost wanna say I wasn't prepared for this, but who would believe me, after I've practically been counting down the hours since my first semester. Do I have to start looking for a job now? Do I feel capable of doing one of those? Lots of amusing things to think about at night. But honestly - if I did get one, I could finally buy myself a microwave and display all the candle holders and cakestands from my dowry box (you'd think I was kidding, but na-ah).

'Tis the year my loveliest friend goes off to Milano for four months. Tonight's the last time I see her before we both leave for our respective places abroad - that is, until I go visit sometime in between moving home and starting the semester. I'm so gonna do it. We'll be back to being belle ragazze in bella Italia, just like the summer before last (throwback here), and it'll be fantastico.

'Tis the year I started with an accidental mini-fringe. Let's just say that I have developed an understanding of that urge to clip off your hair with some nail scissors, and that got mixed with a sudden admiration for the hairstyle that Leah Remini sports in the first season of The King Of Queens that I've been rewatching. I have some sort of semi-permanent hair dye left from the office, too, so we shall see what we're gonna make of that.

Sounds like the plan is a very loose one this time around - leaves more space for imagination, though.  So it's really up to what we come up with.

Rosy Smith

I'm back! I'm free! I'm watching How I Met Your Mother in the morning and Friends in the evening and I only took the train once to go shopping and it was great. I'm on break aka the best two times of the year. Hence, I spent the last few days of January just sorta sitting there, recharging (and getting a weird neck pain. Now that I'm thinking about it, I might have gotten it from all the sitting in un-ergonomical angles). But now I'm getting bored and that means I need some missions!

I want lace up ankle boots with a square heel and I'm not taking a "we don't carry those" for an answer. I saw the perfect pair through the window of some store that was closed already, so I know they exist and I'm gonna own them. No one likes a good shoe challenge as much as I do. Also, I have already planned an occasion where I wanted to wear them so I'm in a bit of a rush.

Oh, now I accidentally closed this draft while narrowing down shoe choices. Haven't found the perfect one yet, but I'll let you know. It would be so much easier if people wouldn't keep making these structured soles.

Anyways, Jauary was, once again, crammy and way too casual when it came to doing my hair. A week ago from today, we had our final presentations and it they felt like being in labor for nine hours, just without the physical pain. We had a two hour delay and guess who was on last? By the time it was my turn I had a hard time remembering what I was supposed to be talking about, let alone which slide came on when, but I didn't really care because I just very much wanted to get out of that room that either smelled or got freezing cold and would have said anything to get it over with. I also got sent a picture of a naked Daniel Radcliffe with a horse (you know which one) and even though I'm still wondering why exactly someone felt the need to show me, it did kinda cheer me up.

Now onto the missions: It's time to go and fix my incredibly rebellious hair, start eating all food groups and find some dance crew that's looking for an unpracticed ballet dancer to do combinations to all my favorite songs. And that internship (I can start by September, just tell me where to show up), I always forget that one.

That wasn't really news to you, I know, but that's the beauty of January, it's just a big pause button. The actual start of the New Year is today (okay, yesterday, but I was busy yesterday so go with it).

Love,

Rosy Smith

A useful tip for everyone who's ever typed "meaningful gifts boyfriend" into the google search bar: Any idea you get from that won't be meaningful anymore 'cause you didn't think of it on your own. However, *she said as she was happily noticing the beforementioned tab had finally loaded*, I have accepted a long time ago that I am just not that person who can read their loved one's beautiful mind. Except sometimes in conversation and stuff. But I guess that's not enough of a meaningful gift, either.

Is it smelling like catfood in here? Ew. So, I might have thought of something romantic that wouldn't make me wanna puke right away - but as I'm notoriously running late I'm not sure I'll find it in time while aimlessly roaming the city. Now it's the age-old battle between accepting the fair-but-expensive-sounding amazon price and the shipping fees or hoping to find the same thing as a bargain at some weird little store. The latter could go completely wrong and I'd have to pay even more/not find it at all, but the amazon thing is time-bound and I'd have to decide quickly and I hate to do that.

Okay, so I want to get him a tiny silver box with a quote from "The Little Prince" engraved, namely "Puisque c'est ma rose" meaning "Because it's my rose", referring to the little prince saying that his own rose is different from the other roses in the world because of the special bond they share together, and put a petal of the first rose he gave me in there. Does that make you sick? I'm kinda feeling it (while you're at it, please tell me why I talked like a Kardashian just now).

Just realized in striking horror that our one-year-anniversary is coming up - I'm not that terrified by the fact that it's been so long but rather by the fear of having to make yet another present up out of thin air. Do people give each other gifts for that occasion? Does only the guy do it? Can't we just go out to dinner, please?

No way am I gonna acknowledge Valentine's Day, that much I know.

Maybe I should hold back on the romantic, useless gifts until the anniversary, though, just in case. Gotta be prepared for him doing something cute. If he doesn't, I'll just keep it around until next Christmas.

So now I was finally getting ready to get serious and order the box on amazon for whatever occasion as well as the material part, a golf ball monogram thing, when I made the fatal mistake of reading its reviews. 6 out of 10 people are pretty mad about it, it seems. So either way everyone's doing it totally wrong or it's impossible to handle. Great! Now I can't buy it anymore with a clear conscious. I mean, I wouldn't use it but I'd feel bad about knowingly getting him junk (NOT intended). Also, about the waste of my money.

Let's see, now I'm only sure that I want to get that box, but probably not for his birthday, and probably not get that golf ball thingie at all, so that leaves me with, oh, yeah, the sweet gift of nothing for now.

That went astonishingly well.

Plan C: I'll hit the city every day starting on friday until I find something. Oh dear.

UPDATE: It's five days later and I hit the city once and realized that I will only get more confused if I spend hours running from one random store to another contemplating whether he might like Pottery Barn sheets WHO AM I KIDDING nobody wants sheets for their birthday, do they? Now I can only hope amazon's delivery time will be accurate and no one of my family will make stupid comments about why I am getting a tiny silver box because I will definitely freak out if someone dares to question my choice of gift. I'm that bad at it.

....or not, we don't know yet. See, at that party there was a sweet girl in attendance whom I've met before among that same crowd and she sat next to me during the poker game; on my other side was someone I once named as "cute guy" even though since then, he has turned out to be more of  a "cowardly guy with astonishing self-confidence" but that would be too long to use now. Anyways, my bestest friend sat across from me and sometimes we broke into insider conversations about things like our lit class teacher from high school and the other two couldn't quite catch up with that so they would start to talk to each other instead, asking the polite, interested questions people ask when they first meet strangers, and he somehow managed to mention the time "when I lived in Paris" and that seems to really get the girls. Or maybe the astonishing self-confidence is intruiging at first. But I shouldn't be so judging, since he's one of the best friends of my certain someone and I should be "noble". So I'll grant the fact that to someone who doesn't know him, he could seem witty and smart, I guess. Because even though those conversations across the poker chips were the only close contact I witnessed between them that night, and even though he was making out with other people's girlfriends later on (after the sweet girl already left, bless her), they are on for a date today. What a turn of events.

I'm on the home stretch for this semester! The day after the day after tomorrow, I'll hold my presentation. I absolutely dispise the kind of presentations we have to hold at my school. It's never "look at this power point slide. That's how I did it" but always "spot on me, look at my contemporary dance moves, do you get what I'm trying to tell you? You better, 'cause I'm not gonna just say it even though it would be sparing both of us a lot of precious lifetime". It's ridiculous how the word "creativity" is being misused to justify the unnecessary trouble they send us through all of the time.

To celebrate, I'm hitting the city with the abovementioned friend on saturday and I'll buy everything that brings me joy. I forbade myself to do so the last time I was wandering by all the beautiful sale signs, because I didn't want to reward myself before having finished that stupid presentation. Aren't I disciplined? It's a new feeling, and it's not a fun one.

 Can't wait 'til friday.

Love,

Rosy Smith

When I was graduating and supposed to be studying for my final, final exams, I once procrastinated by sketching out my dream loft in New York City. I have the draft somewhere but it's not exactly gonna win me an architecture prize; still, I can tell you exactly what I pictured drawing that. You're supposed to come into the main part of the loft, a wide space with windows to the floor all across the wall and wooden tiles. There is nothing in it, except for long, fluffy white curtains and a concert piano in the center, with a single rose on it (judging from experience, that rose is probably dead and there are about a million pieces of sheetmusic clattered around). As you turn left, you realize I actually thought of living amenities and have a sofa (no leather 'cause that's cold and slippery), a coffee table and some cupboards with a TV set. Oh and by the window, I have my desk to sit and write at. The kitchen is a bit hidden by a half-wall (what a word). In it, there's a free standing counter as well as a long table for dinners with other people, and everything will look sparkling new because I can't cook. On the right side of the main part, there is a more cozy corner with armchairs and a fuzzy rug where you sink in, and lots of bookshelves and a side window. In that corner, there also is the only door of the room that leads to the bedroom. Inside, there is a vanity table and one of these sunk-in window seats and a really high four poster bed and more shelves with personal things. Another door opens to the bathroom and the door next to that will get you to the heart of everything: The closet.
When I discovered the New York based storage service MakeSpace (they pick up everything you'd like to store, provide the storage location and bring your items back to you if you wish; all in all, it costs less than self-storage, I hear) I got the idea to describe that place in more detail, and since talking about myself and clothes is obviously a pleasure for me, here we go:

First of all, my dream closet takes up a whole room, about 24 square yards big. There's cream colored, soft carpet on the floor and a cream leather chaiselounge as well as one of these leather bean bags but formed like a cylinder (get it?) to lounge on while picking out what to wear: I always sit down in front of my closet because it can take me a while to scan everything. There is a small coffee table in here as well, with a glass top and sort of vintage-y legs, to scatter magazines and pictures onto.

On the wall across from the door, there is a huge mirror covering the whole middle part of the wall. On each side of it, there are lightly polished wooden racks (they might even be soft white) where all of my shoes, which will hopefully be plenty and luxurious, have a place. There are small glass doors every two lines, though, to avoid all that dusting.

All images are from Pinterest, none of them are mine (sadly)

Okay, onto the side walls of the room. On the left one, there are two grand wardrobes out of the same wood as the shoe racks. Between them, there is a rack of the same kind but with handbags instead (I'm not that into bags so one rack will do). Inside the left wardrobe there is a row of pants, a row of shirts and sweaters and tops and blouses and a long row of dresses and skirts (I'd say that 66% of the time I wear thights).

The right wardrobe is reserved for evening gowns, jackets and coats (those things tend to take up much room, hence the own closet). Turning to the right wall of the room, there are two cupboards. Above them, there are framed magazines and artsy ballet and fashion pictures. The cupboards hold drawers full of thights, lingerie, dance wear and lounge stuff such as teddy pants and fuzzy socks. When you go through the door and take a sharp turn right, there is a piece of wall leaving just enough space for a third wardrobe but with drawers instead of double doors. When it's summer, the winter clothes are kept there, and when the seasons start changing I gradually exchange the wardrobe's contents, too.

Oh, and there's a mini fridge as well for when my friends and I dress up together in my closet before going to a fancy event: I'll put sparkling wine and Oreos (cookies don't smudge) in there. And some loudspeakers need to be installed onto the walls and connected to the stereo in the living room area; Dressing is way more fun with good music to prance around to in front of the mirror.

Goodness, now I want to live in my hypothetical closet right away.

What would yours look like? Just imagining it could make you happy!

Also, check out MakeSpace's website
and their nationwide locations
for more info on their service as well as dream closets!

Rosy Smith

....while juggling January duties. It's final's month for me and I'm going to the printer's tomorrow for the first booklet, then dart back home to study for my written exams next week and write an essay, a report, an interview (for which I need actual people to interview and I haven't asked anyone yet. Good luck finding someone who lets you watch them perform a body modification when you're not sure you wouldn't puke) and an article as fast as I can. I'm sorry for going into so much detail, but listing things makes me calmer about them. Or more hysteric, depending which time of the day it is. I found out that none of my classmates has really done anything more than I have, and even though you shouldn't measure your success in comparision to others not being more successful, it does help a bit. Fuels the fire (what?).

But through all that, I can see February twinkling at me in bright, hopeful colors! There's so much to do, I get these ideas all the time but keep putting them off until I'm done with all that stuff. Let me get a grasp.

I've been reading a biography about F. Scott Fitzgerald and his wife Zelda and I'm intruiged and heartbroken (which is probably not a rare effect their story has on people). I went right on to reading about the fabulous yet sad Dorothy Parker, and all that reading about brilliantly creative people who led these rapid, extravagant lives and still lost at happiness no matter how hard they tried makes me want to book into the Plaza and let everybody visit me for Martinis, kiss the wrong man and pour my feelings into a typewriter. However, I prefer to write chipper endings to all the stories concerning myself. Maybe that's why I wasn't born into the Round Table.

What I really want is to figure out my hair, which is not in a good place at the moment, let me tell ya. I just realized, horrified, that it must have been miscut for approximately the last five years now. I'm alarmingly tempted to just grab some scissors and cut it right off. But that sort of behaviour doesn't have the sanest reputation, I hear.

I also postponed getting worked up about finding an internship for the fall - but hey, if you got a cozy, paid creative writing spot for me, hit me up! At a newspaper, not your couch, obviously.

And I need two things desperately: Shopping and dance class. The latter because I feel like my muscles are gradually vanishing, I might have increased my candy consume, and I miss dancing with every fiber of my being, so there's that. And I can't quite remember the last time I really went shopping and I crave new material things intensely. Isn't it almost spring? That's as good as any excuse to be brand new.

Then, when I'm wrapped in fresh clothes, have great hair, stretched fingers, and lots of time on my hands, I'll sit down and write and write and go out at night. It'll be just fantastic.

20 days to go.

Love,

Rosy Smith

.....Coming to you from the hair stylist's because I'm officially done with finals and free to do whatever I please! I made it without burning something (that was really within the range of possibilities and I still don't know why)! And what better way to celebrate my return to the living than by looking the part?

As for styling, today, I'm channeling Ally from The Notebook, 'cause tomorrow, I actually get to show off at a fashion show plus after party - I heard this one gets especially good, so let's hope I find an outfit since I had to throw all of my plans over....I needed those boots and I'm not sure if I make it to the faraway mall where I've tracked them down to in time. I'd need to drive there and that's so exhausting - so my very last resort is hitting some fancy boutiques in the hopes for either a substitute or a miracle.

It's the final breakdown - what a pun. Sadly, most of January has been spent studying/pretending to study while online shopping. However, in between randomly falling asleep around 7 pm and unpacking packages of high-waisted jeans, I managed to scribble down a highly inspirational list to guide me through the next semester so I don't end up watching Friends in my PJs every single night but only on weeknights or something; Honestly, I've been seeing that show on TV ever since I was little and then hadn't for a couple years, and now I'm binge-watching it and it's contributing so much to my emotional state - it makes me cry like it was the saddest thing ever when you have to give away your monkey(does that word look weird to you? It looks weird to me) and it makes me laugh out loud, but really, which is something not many TV series can do. It's a mixture of fond memories and a whole new level of understanding. If you don't know it, drop everything to see it now and thank me later.

Go on, do it.

Compliment of the day: The stylist just told me I have nice handwriting. This is the first time ever somebody said that to me. I'm flattered, but baffled. As you can see above, it's not always the first thing coming to mind. In fact, I hope my professors can take it - they might be spoiled by all the design students with their cute colorful markers.

Can I just state again how much I hate graphic design. I may have gotten some kind of finished result, but I'm so never ever going to design the magazine page I'm writing on - aren't there seperate jobs for that? I mean, yeah, I think it's pretty when a headline represents the topic or whatever, but I really couldn't care less about how it's done.

Self-discovery so far: I did one of those online job profile tests and it turns out I should either be a singer, a composer, or a musical theatre performer. I wouldn't mind doing either of those things, they  do sound lovely; however, I'm not too sure how the multiple choice test has been judging my musical abilities. But it's nice to have options, you know.

Sometimes I think I should write about hard-hitting things such as alcoholism. Not that I'm an alcoholic, but that's one of those prime examples for hitting hard. But then, I'm having so much fun writing about my problem with scarves - should I feel bad? I don't want to feel bad, to be honest, 'cause that's so stressful.

Anything special, you may ask? There's a plan. Actually, my loveliest friend came up with it. Our missions are bound to set off some sort of reaction - let's hope it's the favored one this particular time.

Watch it.

Love,

Rosy Smith

PS: Goodness, almost forgot to mention my January soundtrack obsession with Meghan Trainor! She's so fun. She makes me less tired. And she's got a dang good voice.

....It all started a couple weeks ago when I had some free time during school hours and wandered into a shoe store to amuse myself. In the categorization of shopaholics, I'd say I'm a shoe//dress addict combination, so this is really no unusual place for me to seek satisfaction in. This store in particular had lots and lots of beautiful ankle boots and I wanted to own them all - who cares they're all plain black leather with a similar heel? Each one was smiling at me in an oh so irresistible way, I could only aw and beam at them in a happy daze, sauntering from one to the other. Then, I spotted them: The one pair of boots that wouldn't make me feel like I was eleven again and stuffing not-so-skinny jeans into shoes in which I look even shorter than I already am.

You have to know, lovelies, that I stopped wearing boots that go over my ankles years ago and have only worn low shafted ones ever since. Furthermore, I solely own a single pair of flat winter shoes because with all of the layers and fuzzy big coats going on at winter time, I like to stand as tall as I possibly can. I've not missed wearing boots much since I felt my legs show a lot better in ankle boots, anyways - however, recently I kinda wanted to have a pair again, just to provide a little more variety in the footwear game. But goodness, there are SO many weird flat overknees with a flap out there, as opposed to SO little options with a decent heel that isn't so thin that when you wear it to school or work people try to stuff money into their rim (those can be really cool, but I guess I want to start with more wearable ones and work my way up) and a height that compliments my leg. So, when I tried on my find back then, I was really excited about them and took some pics while I strutted around in the store, where I've felt so at home that I'd taken my coat off and left my shoes God knows where. Don't ask me where those vanished to.

And then, I didn't buy them.

I know! It's such a shame, but they were kind of pricey, and I hesitated, and then I had to catch a ride and go to class or something profane like that, and I left them.

But if it's real love, you'll always meet again, as someone wise probably said in a somewhat different context, so by fate, I walked into that same store last week and they had 50% off.
You heard me right. If that isn't the stuff great romances are made of, I don't know what is.
I quickly consulted the situation and realized I had to be on my stupid train home in six minutes, so I made dramatic promise to the sample boot and ran as "I will always love you" played from the station speakers....

The next plottwist is supposed to be a train delay on Monday when I'll gain enough time to try them on once again and sign my receipt. If that won't work out, pray for me that the 50 % discount will last until Wednesday, when I'll surely, definitely have a spare half hour to succeed.

Wish me luck.

Love,

Rosy Smith

UPDATE:

The discount lasted until Wednesday. However, they didn't carry my size anymore and I would've cried if I hadn't been distracted by a lady telling me not to leave my bag out of sight or it would get stolen. It was like my mother sent her.

At home, my warrior sense strenghtened itself and I started a semi professional online search and found a pair in my size! In a different city, but we're desperate here. I made a few calls, pridened myself and my investigative skills, and actually persuaded someone to get them for me and drop them at my doorstep. It felt like the last lines of a fairytale.

And here they are, my treasured ones:

So, I sat there in the train, all dolled up (well, at least my lipstick was damn well on point) for the going-away party of one of my classmates, a lovely girl who's gotten my jokes (that's not the sole reason I like her, but I wanted to point that out as it certainly adds to my fondness towards her) and the first thing that happens is that my phone, at 80 percent battery, dies a sudden, blackout death. A long and painful one, too, since it desperately turned itself on over and over again but never got past the PIN. Great.
Who doesn't love to be cut off from the world alone on a train on a Saturday night? It's not only that I like to be able to call the cops, or my mom, but I also didn't know when and where I was gonna meet anyone. Which is always a nice feeling.

Secondly, I was having a small college decision life crisis in the afternoon and still indulged in thoughts on that - but since dwelling up on public transport would be my idea of a personal low-point, I redeemed myself and decided to make up a nice scenario instead, which didn't turn out to be such a good idea, either. Now, I was basically talking to a person in the empty seat beside me. People must've thought I'm having a split personality.

Quick tip, you shouldn't imagine sharing your headphones with someone whom you happened to meet on a train and then conversing about your passion for Dance of the Vampires and then him to be overcome with the intensity of the music and kissing you. That's awful, even for an imaginary scene. It's not an healthy habit, lovelies.

Right now, all that I can say is Thank God for Starbucks and their electricity, 'cause it saved my life (and my battery, for now). I didn't even order anything. Is that against some rules? I'm just furiously scribbling away while waiting for a friend, and therefore distributing to Starbuck's image as a place where creative spirits unwind. You're welcome.

The guy over there's just studying, doesn't have a drink, either. Who's trying harder to give back now? Yeah, that'd be me.
Well, dang it. I'm running out of space to creatively scribble on.

The original scribble (back of the list of my books for school)
However, I'm happy to announce the evening got way, way better; Firstly, we had pizza, which always means instant-happiness to me. Afterwards, we made our way to the karaoke bar I mentioned here (I think), and that's where the real fun began!
Predictable glass shot. But tasty.

Okay, I'll admit it: We probably sucked. Musically. We sang Lady Marmelade, five girls on a stage made for two, shaking their hips and hoarsely croaking "Voulez-vous couchez avec moi, ce soir" (must've been unbelievably hot) - but isn't that just about the coolest song ever to put a show on to? You'll have to agree with me on this one. And Gosh, I had so much fun. Here comes another reason to like our leaving-girl: If you're looking for someone who'll rock out to every single song with you in the most careless, girl's night out way ever, she's your gal. I just know she'll do fabulous at whatever she'll be doing! And if there's nothing to do for a while, she'll simply be fabulous.

Oh, and our waiter totally hit on her, Sadly, he wasn't really cute, so no sweet goodbye, but who needs that, anyway. Something sour would've been a much better fit for our Cosmos. Write that down, Tom (I didn't quite catch his name, to be honest. Let's call him Tom).

So, all in all, I'd say that whole going-out-thing went very well. I liked it. I'd like to do that all the time. Dance at night, and then write all day.

Who's with me?

Love,

Rosy Smith

....and there's me on the street listening to Sparks Fly VERY loudly and pretending to walk down a T-stage, only that it's 8 am and way too dark to see anything resembling a spark.

I swear, I was on lovesong-level zero a few nights ago, seeing as somebody changing his hair can make me loose all interest I ever had in being the love of their lives (proving once again my unbelievable personal depth). At least I thought so for about three hours, and the worst thing is, I was actually fine with it. Usually, as you might know, I get seriously disappointed when I realize that my latest affections were given to the way somebody carries their jeans and quickly disappear as soon as they change into a bermuda. It's always a little sad to find out it obviously wasn't the real deal, once again. However, this time I just thought: Alright, saves me some complications during finals (what have they done to me, here I am, being reasonable).

I mean, it's not okay that your hair grows longer than mine does within three months. (Relative to one another of course. I can't tolerate long long hair, that's just....no.) It's not only unfair, it's against the rules. The rules, if you're wondering, include not getting a tattoo, nose job, or new haircut while I'm crushing on you, 'cause that's interfering with my imaginary feelings. Sorry if this isn't very comprehensible, but it all made sense to me around 4 am that night.

The thing is - and here goes my issue - that I actually think I got over the hair. Devastating, isn't it? Me, the girl who will scratch your name from her diary if you blow your nose in her presence. I know. My loveliest friend suggested that there is always some kind of backleash after you've not seen somebody for a while and went totally crazy for them in your head. Because after the first shock, you remember why you sorta kinda liked them in the first place, and remember how sweet they were, looking down at you and making sure you find a seat and smiling that little smile that can keep you up for hours wondering if they're an annoyingly, adorably polite person or if they like you just a little, little bit in a way that makes them, too, go....

....well, damn.

Not much to add here.

Love,

Rosy Smith
